IN THE COMPANY OF HORSES: A YEAR ON THE ROAD WITH MARK RASHID (2006)

When Kathleen Lindley showed up at one of Mark Rashid’s horsemanship clinics, she told him that she didn’t know who he was and didn’t really care, as long as he could fix her horse. In the course of working with him and learning about his way of training horses, not only was Kathleen’s horse “fixed,” her life was changed. This book documents her time spent with Mark Rashid and the deeper appreciation and knowledge she gained for horses and life.

A LIFE WITH HORSES: SPIRIT OF THE WORK (2007)

A Life with Horses is an intimate look at Mark Rashid’s craft of horse training as seen through the lens of Kathleen Lindley. These photographs illustrate the faith, trust, commitment, and integrity that is inherent in Mark’s work. Each poignant photograph is accompanied by descriptive, lyrical text; the words of Mark and Kathleen illustrating the close, personal moments. “The best horse training tools are the human mind and body, in particular the hand.” A Life with Horses details the aspects of horse handling needed to create the unique bond between horse and rider and perfectly captures this intricate journey. A Life with Horses is a beautiful 192-page soft-cover coffee table book.

THE ROCKIN' S SNAFFLE BIT

The Rockin' S is a plain snaffle bit with a sweet iron mouthpiece, designed by Mark Sulan of Rockin' S Quarter Horses in Illinios, USA. What is unique about this bit is the structure of the rings. There are three rings on each side of the Rockin' S: a small ring to which the headstall attaches, a complete round ring that remains in contact with the horse's lips and face, and a movable d-ring to which the rein attaches. This ring structure seems to stabilize the bit in the horse's mouth and provide more surface area on each side of the horse's face. This appears to enable the bit to help some horses who toss their heads, push on the bit, have trouble steering or are just generally "fussy' or uncomfortable with other bits. While this bit is not a "magic bullet" by any means, nor is it a substitute for good horsemanship, it does seem to help quite a few horses. In some cases the changes seen are subtle, and in other cases the changes are quite stunning. The Rockin' S is available in 5", 5.5" and 6" mouthpieces.
